The success of Bill Gates: The Microsoft age

Gates, at 13, was enrolled in Lakeside Prep School, where he wrote his first program. He acquired an interest in programming the General Electric system in BASIC while in eighth grade and was excused from class to pursue it. As a result, Gates wrote his first program on a General Electric machine.

He met Paul Allen at school, when they collaborated to identify vulnerabilities in Computer Center Corporation's PDP-10 system. In exchange for computer time and royalties, Gates, Paul, and two other students created a payroll software for Information Sciences.

When the entire school became aware of Gates' programming abilities, it created quite a stir.

Bill's school friend Allen discovered an article on MITS's first mass-market Altair microcomputer in 1975. However, the machine lacked software. On the other side, Bill and Allen saw this as a chance to start their own software company.

When Bill Gates approached MITS, he had no choice but to lie and pretend that he and a buddy had already created the BASIC programming language for the company's idea.
